EDUCATION through FITNESS designed to enhance each child’s quality of life
The Sacramento Running Association (SRA) is a not-for profit organization, and youth fitness is one of its primary beneficiaries. The FREE programs developed by the SRA include the Fall California International Marathon (CIM) Youth Fitness Program (4,000 kids annually), the Spring Track Youth Fitness Program (1,000 kids annually), a Summer All-Comers Track Meet series, and several short distance fun runs and relays held in conjunction with longer SRA events.
The SRA has offered the Fall Youth Fitness Program since its inception in 1988 and it began including its maraFUNrun finale in 1990 in conjunction with the CIM. In 2010, the SRA etablished its Spring Track Youth Fitness Program and in 2012 introduced the Summer All-Comers Track Meet series.
The Fall program was established in honor of Kenny King, who was Sacramento’s oldest runner at age 77. This program has since introduced more than 40,000 youngsters to the sport that Kenny loved so much. The Spring program was established to introduce Sacramento's inner city elementary school children to track and field events. It is followed by the SRA Summer All-Comers meets. All are free and funded by proceeds from the California International Marathon.
New for 2012, the SRA is expanding its very popular California International Marathon Fall Youth Fitness Program to encompass the entire school year. In past years, teachers and other youth group coordinators prepared their students to run the CIM’s maraFUNrun using the SRA’s Fall Youth Fitness Program. Now the SRA is encouraging both past program leaders and those new to the program to help their kids stay fit with running for the entire school year, August to June. Fitness doesn’t stop in December!
We believe these programs will help children establish life long fitness habits, so they too can be active at age 77 and beyond. Learn more about each program by clicking on the links below.
